Um dos principais sucessos da canadense Joni Mitchell, Big Yellow Taxi mostra a preocupação da cantora em relação ao meio ambiente. Joni escreveu a canção depois de uma viagem ao Havaí, onde testemunhou o desrespeito, a falta de sensibilidade do homem com a natureza. Na letra, Joni faz um apelo: “Hey, fazendeiro, pare de usar DDT (um tipo de pesticida). Não me importo se minhas maçãs têm buracos. Não mate os pássaros e abelhas, por favor”.
Em uma entrevista ao jornalista Alan McDougall, em 1970, a cantora revelou a inspiração para Big Yellow Taxi. “Estava em um hotel no Havaí. Acordei de manhã, puxei as cortinas e vi lindas montanhas verdes. Mas depois reparei que também havia um gigantesco estacionamento. Uma mancha no paraíso. Isso foi de cortar o coração”, disse. A canção ambiental de Joni é tão significativa que já foi cantada por muitos outros artistas, inclusive o mestre Bob Dylan.
